Discovering innovative beauty brands is what beauty bloggers like myself liiiiiiiiive for! Long gone are the days of big beauty brands dominating the landscape (Estee Lauder, who?), now, it’s all about clean ingredients and a smart new approach to skincare/makeup, and small brands are proving capable of achieving these fetes far better than the big guys. So, with discovery on my mind, I ventured downtown to the Indie Beauty Expo LA 2018 yesterday to mingle with my fellow beauty bloggers, meet brand founders and learn about the latest in beauty! Below I highlight a few of the interesting product offerings I came across, including “botox” wrinkle prevention patches, fruit protein powder, water-less body cleanser and more.

Marajuana is in, and it’s anti-inflammatory. The nation is discovering the benefits of CBD, one type of cannabinoid found in marijuana, for humans and animals, so it’s not surprising we’re now finding the non-psychotropic component of marijuana in skincare! CBD has been found in studies to have therapeutic benefits including, anti-anxiety, sedative, anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxant to name a few. The anti-inflammatory benefits are what skincare brands like Crave Skincare are picking up on and combining with antioxidant rich ingredients like sea kelp and tremella mushroom extract. What to try: Glo-Berry Glistening Skin Oil Serum $49 for the prettiest shimmer and to improve skin’s vitality; Crave Virgin Skin Serum $46 for intense soothing capabilities. *The founder knows a thing or two about soothing inflamed skin, as a former rosacea sufferer, inflammatory skin issues were the reason she founded this line.

A sunscreen you apply while washing your face?!  Yah, I was shocked too when I came across this SPF face wash product created by dermatologist founded brand, KlenSkin. The line includes a series of body washes and soaps that purport to offer SPF protection from UVA/UVB rays as well as a topical lotion. While I love the idea of the ease of applying SPF while in the shower to adequately cover the body, especially if you’re an athlete spending long periods of time outdoors, upon further digging I discovered the ingredients are not clean by any means. The brand doesn’t include ingredient lists on their website, which is always a red flag, but I found the ingredients on their partner retailer, Amazon, and sulfates were on the list.

Skincare for athletes and those on the-go. Running around from hot-yoga to the grocery store and then out to drinks with the girls and no time to shower? No, worries. All you need is Yuni Beauty. This athlete targeted skincare line has full body shower wipes for on the-go and a full body sanitizing body mousse you can use to cleanse the body sans water?! Aloe water comprises the base for both products and neem leaf extract for its strong antiseptic and antibacterial properties. What to try: Yuni Shower Sheets Large Body Wipes $15.

Ingestible collagen powder with a twist. Ingestible collagen has been super popular in wellness and beauty circles for a few years as more and more studies are shedding light on the supplement’s skin boosting benefits. But up until now, collagen powders available in the US have been made from grass-fed cow hides, that is – until now. La Sirene is bringing to the US market ingestible collagen powder sourced from fish bones; a form of collagen widely used in Japan. The brand offers their fish collagen in three flavors: unflavored, blueberry and orange. Each flavored box contains a one month supply. What to try: La Sirene ORANGE Beauty Collagen $79.99. This flavor includes a powerful punch of Vitamin C, an antioxidant that works synergistically with hydrolyzed collagen to build new elastin and collagen in the dermis.

Fruit protein powder. Dope Naturally is bringing fruit protein powder to the forefront of vegan protein options! Move over disgusting pea and brown rice protein (c’mon, no one thinks these two are delicious…), and make way for the likes of watermelon protein powder. I sampled their four flavors and they were all delicious: Melonaid, Beet Force, Beet Bliss and Atomic Beauty. Each flavor is completely organic and contains only four ingredients. The Melonaid and Atomic Beauty contain 8g and 13g, respectively, of protein, while the two beet flavors only contain 1g of protein per tablespoon serving, but are meant more as superfood additives. What to try: Melonaid Protein Powder $45 for it’s naturally sweet and earthy flavor!

Patches that prevent wrinkles. Wrinkles form from the repetitive creasing of the skin by repetitive facial movements. This is why botox is so effective; it prevents facial muscles from making certain facial movements that crease the skin, thus smoothing out the appearance of wrinkles. But if you’re skeptical of botox injections or want a less invasive option, Frownies have you covered. These little patches, worn at night, are meant to retrain the muscles to lay flat and soften the appearance of fine lines. Simple method, but I wonder how the patches will adhere to my slippery face post my nighttime skincare routine… I’ll be testing them out and reporting back. Or if you try them before me, let me know what you think! What to try: Frownies Facial Patches $19.95 for the “eleven” lines between brows.
