If you’ve grown tired of the usual drinks, dinner and a show (or rather – more drinks) as your standby date night plans, opt to spice things up instead with an old world, sensory indulgent experience at AIRE Ancient Baths. The cavernous 16,000 square feet, co-ed Tribeca spa, where only twenty guests are allowed at a time (and the only American off-shoot of the original Seville location), blends Turkish, Arabic and Grecian bathing rituals with a hint of Moroccan decor and Spanish masonry. You’ll feel transported back to Roman times as you pad along in your swim suit and black booties (provided to all guests as a preventative measure from slipping), down to the subterranean level where various temperature pools await surrounded by candlelight.
If you book your bathing sessions for a Friday evening from 9-11 (or Tuesday from 7-9), like I did, you’ll shift between the four pools -102 degrees “calderium,” 97 degree “tepidarium,” and two twin “frigidarium” pools at 50 and 57 degrees – while two acoustic guitarists sit among the steam and soaking guests playing romantic, classic Spanish ballads. Not sure it gets more romantic than that.
A saltwater bath allows for weightless floating and an aggressive bubbling “jacuzzi,” offer two alternative pools for unwinding, but the glass enclosed eucalyptus steam room is perhaps my favorite. Tucked off to the side you’ll find a heated marble bench (large enough for various couples to strewn about) and the perfect spot to relax and sip fresh juices from The Butcher’s Daughter, while waiting to be collected for your couples massage; Basic massages can be purchased in fifteen minute increments, or if you’re interested in something special, book a thirty minute private soak in a red wine bath followed by a sixty minute massage. (For strong hands, book with Kevin; He’ll untangle every knot and have you melting by the end.)
Now all you need is a date…
