[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In the middle of bustling downtown San Diego, close to the harbor, lies a spa oasis called Spa Velia. The old-world boutique San Diego spa sanctuary combines beauty rituals from around the world with cruelty-free, organic products. Arriving for a 90-minute microdermabrasion facial, I found myself immediately transcended into a sensory of zen. Dark tiles, sultry amber walls lit by candlelight, the smell of aromatherapy and soft music greeted me as I checked into the front desk for my, yes, first ever microdermabrasion facial.

Nervous? A little bit, but my esthetician, Lauren, guided me through each initial step of the facial: steam to open up my pores, pre-cleanse with Epicuren’s Silk Radiance Cleansing Oil (formulated with grape seed oil, repairing antioxidants, antibacterial coconut oil, and immunity boosting ginger oil). She removed my makeup with a pre-cleanse to wash away impurities, followed by deep cleansing with a Clarisonic brush and a gentle face and neck massage to stimulate lymphatic drainage. Next came the star of the show – the microdermabrasion treatment.

If you’re concerned with dull skin, brown spots, minor acne scarring or rough uneven skin texture, microdermabrasion works to exfoliate the skin with tiny crystals reducing the appearance of the aforementioned skin concerns. And is appropriate for all skin types and colors. Similar to dermabrasion (which is basically like using sandpaper to shave down your skin to the dermis, yikes, and involves a lengthy recovery period), microdermabrasion is much gentler version with no down time. The treatment involves a small wand-like device that glides over the face, simultaneously exfoliating with micro-crystals and suctioning away the dead skin cells. While the treatment isn’t painful, there’s a slight resistance as the micro-crystals drag across the skin and a little pull from the suction, which also removes build-up in clogged pores.

Next an Epicuren Hydrating Mineral Mask was applied on my face, neck and décolleté. Packed full of hydrating, anti-aging and restorative minerals, such as copper, zinc, and magnesium, the mask settled into the deepest layers of my skin. Lauren massaged my hands and feet for the ultimate bliss experience. I drifted off to la-la-land.

Before I knew it she was applying the final steps – eye cream, moisturizer and sunscreen – and my 90 minutes were up. My skin felt so smooth, even, pores and fine lines were reduced; The results were amazing after only one session. And I loved that I could apply my makeup right after the treatment, though, it is recommended you let your skin breathe post treatment.

My experience at the San Diego Spa Velia was educational, informative, caring and relaxing. This little oasis was what I needed after a busy day. An investment I highly recommend for anyone in San Diego looking to invest in themselves and take care of their skin.
