Looking back on this past year, I can say 2018 has been one of my favorites: my acne flare ups became a distant memory (thus why the category has been removed this year); pregnancy and the birth of Chloe showed me the joys of motherhood – and the need for clean, efficacious and safe baby products; and while dry/dehydrated skin and perioral dermatitis persisted, I found a rhythm of gentle skincare products to help with both giving me my best skin to-date! Typically, I reserve this best-of list for year end, but it always seems to hit at an inopportune time after…

Using clean, nontoxic haircare is nonnegotiable for me. After rebounding from a receding hairline and major hair loss by turning to green shampoo and hair products, I now avoid harsh chemical surfactants and detergents at all costs to preserve the health of my hair. (Sulfates can be drying and sensitizing to skin over time, AND can weaken hair follicles causing premature breakage.) It’s kind of crazy to think over a year ago my hair was limp, thinning, my hairline severely receding and my scalp was constantly itchy, irritated and oily. I was desperate for a solution. And when I turned to the internet for answers I realized I’m not the only one battling hair thinning struggles.  Hair thinning is as common in women as it is in men, but is less talked about due to social stigma. Um when did salt sprays get so AMAZING?! While I know a thing or two about skincare and makeup, when it comes to hair I’ve only recently (this past year) realized investing in good haircare makes a huge difference. This is partially due to the fact that I was all consumed for so long with skincare and the fact that my hair was (emphasis on ‘was’ pretty low maintenance. For decades, my hair was relatively low maintenance: long, straight, air dried well and looked O.K. with an uncomplicated, cheap haircut. I paid little heed to it and cared for it with the…
