You heard it here first: Moringa is going to be THE NEXT BIG superfood/skin care ingredient! The nutritional content of the leaves is astounding – gram for gram they contain more protein than eggs, more calcium than milk, and more iron than spinach. And the oil extracted from the moringa seeds, contain unique plant hormones that stimulate cell growth, delay the aging of skin cells, and has shown to help with scars and stretch marks!
Say, what?! Yes, I was blown away, too.
Let’s just say I’ve been loading up on the fresh leaves at my local farmers’ market and adding them to my green smoothies every morning!
The co-founder, Emily Cunningham, explained to me that the “moringa oil is very similar to the skin’s natural oil production, so that means it doesn’t clog pores; it’s great for sensitive skin; it’s extremely lightweight and easily absorbs. It’s great for all skin types and can help to balance oil production while hydrating the skin.” (Read our full interview here on how her and her partner are creating a product that has helped lift a community of rural farmers in West Ghana from poverty – it’s such an inspiring story!)
I tested out the below three products, and my sensitive skin loved each one! I’ll be repurchasing a few of them soon, which means a tree will be planted in Ghana on the brand’s nucleus farm in my name.
Read on below for my review of the three products I tried!
Product: Eternal Youth Facial + Body Soap
Best for: Sensitive skin
Why you’ll love it: I was nervous to use this face soap at first. It’s been a long time since I’ve used bar soap to wash my face – we’re talking decades. I think I was ten the last time I used bar soap and it was a hardened bar of orange Dial soap… *shudders*… But I’ve recently discovered that we’re in a new era when it comes to bar soaps and it was this bar soap that has me now obsessed with them!
My skin feels so soft and refreshed after using it. I love the gentle feel and heavenly scent and ended up using this bar up so fast. In the life of a beauty blogger, that’s how you can tell a product is amazing – when you can’t put it down and use it day and night until it’s down to the last drop. Or in this case, the last little piece.
Tip: Buy this one in bulk!
Scent: Light coconut, but slightly herbal from the geranium
Ingredients: MORINGA OLEIFERA (MORINGA) SEED OIL, COCOS NUCIFERA (COCONUT) OIL, PERSEA GRATISSIMA (AVOCADO) OIL, BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII (SHEA) BUTTER, PELARGONIUM GRAVEOLENS (GERANIUM) ESSENTIAL OIL, CYMBOPOGON MARTINI (PALMAROSA) ESSENTIAL OIL, ANIBA ROSAEDORA (ROSEWOOD) ESSENTIAL OIL.
Price: $12 – truemoringa.com
Product: Ultra Light Whipped Body Butter
Best for: Deeply nourishing hand/body cream
Why you’ll love it: I usually shy away from shea butter due to the oily residue most leave behind, but O.M.G. this body butter leaves a dry finish. It’s so rich, but sinks in and hydrates so well! Out of all three of these products this one is my favorite.
Traditional body butters need to be applied right after the shower on damp skin to help them absorb, but this one you can apply on bone dry skin and it will sink right in without leaving any residue.
I like using it as a hand cream the best because it hydrates better than a lotion and doesn’t leave my palms oily!
Tip: Warm it up in your hands before applying
Scent: Very minimal
Ingredients: BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII (SHEA) BUTTER, MORINGA OLEIFERA (MORINGA) OIL, PRUNUS DULCIS (ALMOND) OIL, CARTHAMUS TINCTORIUS (SAFFLOWER) SEED OIL, VANILLA PLANIFOLIA FRUIT, ESSENTIAL OIL BLEND.
Price: $32 – truemoringa.com
Best for: Daytime pre-makeup hydration/skin prep
Why you’ll love it: I love oils for prepping my skin for makeup. They create a smooth, hydrated base, but a lot of them leave an oily residue. This oil sinks right in and leaves a smooth finish! I use it mostly during the daytime, and reach for a heavier oil like jojoba at night. It reminds me a lot of camellia oil, which also is a “dry” oil that feels lightweight.
Tip: Great for sensitive skin and acne prone skin types
Scent: The scent is mild, fresh, and for lovers of lavender oil – it is divine!
Ingredients: Cold Pressed Moringa Oleifera Seed Oil, Organic Lavender Essential Oil (lavandula angustifolia)
Price: $26 – petitvour.com
